The National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene (NYTF) is the oldest and last remaining of the more than 20 historic Yiddish theatre companies that once made New York’s Second Avenue “the Jewish Broadway.” It is the inheritor of a seminal musical and theatrical tradition that gave rise to the contemporary American musical form. For exactly 100 consecutive years, NYTF has produced work that has come to define the immigrant experience and the American dream, as well as introducing Americans to eastern European culture, history, and folklore. The extant cultural knowledge embodied in the company has led to revivals in klezmer music and a resurgence in academic and professional interest in the Yiddish language, as well as provided American Jews with a solid cultural identity that can be found in few other places.
