June 16 – 8pm – Borscht Ball – Following last year’s success, we will bring back Borscht Ball, a concert of modern Klezmer and Russian Jewish pop culture to take place at the Paperbox in Brooklyn, featuring leading Russian Jewish musicians, bands and Russian Cuisine. Possible Special Guest bands from Moscow: OPA, Silver Wedding.
June 15 – 7pm-10pm – Yiddish Soul: A Concert of Cantorial and Chassidic Superstars – Featuring Joseph Malovany, world renowned tenor and cantor of New York’s 5th Avenue Synagogue; Lipa Schmeltzer, internationally renowned Chassidic singer, songwriter, concert and recording star; Netanel Hershtik, cantor of the Hampton synagogue and member of a legendary cantorial family; Yanky Lemmer, beloved cantor of the Lincoln Square Synagogue on the Upper West Side; and special guest Dudu Fisher, prolific Israeli recording and concert star, appeared as Jean Valjean in Les Misèrables on Broadway, frequent specials on PBS. Also featuring the Maccabeats, the Jewish a capella all-stars who have taken the nation by storm, and Chassidic trio Zusha, the world soul band whose spiritual melodies have been climbing the world music charts. Emcee Nachum Segal, Musical Director Avremi Gourarie and Producer Moishe Rosenfeld. Presented in partnership with Kulturfest, a festival of international Jewish performing arts which is produced by the National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene; Bryna Wasserman, Executive Director; Zalmen Mlotek, Artistic Director; Christopher Massemine, Executive Producer; and the Museum of Jewish Heritage, a Living Memorial to the Holocaust. June 19 – 3pm – Fiddler on the Roof Singalong – Come celebrate the Papas at this interactive Father’s Day event! Join cast members Rosalind Harris (Tzeitel), Neva Small (Chava), television personality Adam B. Shapiro (The Cobbler, The Normal Heart) and other special guests, come in costume and sing your favorite hits from the 1971 film adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical.
June 26 – A Taste of Jewish Culture Street Fair – Organized by the Workmen’s Circle. Folksbiene will have a table to promote The Golden Bride and Kulturfest.
August 7 – 3pm – Tararam – An exciting musical, theatrical and dance experience, Tararam, will make a special appearance, free of admission, in Battery Park adjacent the Museum of Jewish Heritage. Widely referred to as Israel’s “Stomp,” shows incorporate witty and comical scenes interwoven with brilliantly executed body drumming and a variety of extraordinary sounds and rhythms that celebrate the world around us from a young and fresh Israeli and Middle Eastern perspective.
August 29 – 8pm – Jinta La Mvta – Founded by clarinetist Okuma Wataru – one of Japan’s few Klezmer experts – and his partner, drummer Kogure Miwazo, Japan’s premier Klezmer band returns to repeat their sensational performance at last year’s festival.
